This whole project started with my dad. My mom was raised Catholic, but he wanted me and my siblings to be raised Jewish; we went to Hebrew school, had bar/bat mitzvah ceremonies, and celebrate all the Jewish holidays. He also gave my brother the family’s herloom tallit (that I didn’t even know we had), at once introducing me to the tradition and excluding me from it. But I was always curious: Why didn’t he wear the heirloom tallit?

“Tell me story of how you got your tallit

“Did you know the significance of a tallit? What was your understanding of the significance?”

When I asked “Do you still wear your tallit after your bar mitzvah ceremony?”, he said “No.”

“What does wearing a tallit mean to you?”

“Do you wish you had more opportunities to wear it?”
