My project is a multimedia compilation of the discovering, unpacking, and sorting, of theories and beliefs that me and my roommate, Alison, have been doing together for the past year. I have found so much solace in the ways our home, Highrise 601, has given me the space to digest everything that we learn from our professors, from our parents, our friends, and from the world right now. As we all know, this is a daunting task that often leaves people paralyzed. But we encouraged each other to find new ways of thinking that, even if they could not make us feel fully consoled, reminded us that there are people persistently looking for and discussing alternatives to the lives we know as Americans. To be partaking in these conversations on our own was a praxis in itself.
For my collage, I used two magazines from the 90’s that Alison had found at Estate Treasures earlier in the semester. I also used the photos from an American History book that I found in the free books section on the first floor of Albritton. Collage is something that me and Alison enjoy doing together, and so her donation of materials for this project felt very fitting—she often provides much of the best collage material anyway. As for the history book, I feel it speaks to the way that Alison and I, and many of the rest of America’s young adults, are tasked with making sense of an incredibly violent history and State.
The audio clips are taken from various conversations that Alison consented I record through the spring semester of 2025. They speak to recurring dilemmas that we have come back to again and again, as well as some of the humor and lightheartedness that finds its way into our more heavy conversations where we struggle to make meaning of the things happening around us. In one clip, two other people join in on Alison and my conversation, a representation of 601 being a space that breeds these kinds of discussions for more than just its residence.
